Remembering Mrs Jean Austin

It is with sadness that we share the news of the death of Mrs Jean Austin, a long-standing and much-loved former resident of Newborough, who passed away on 12 September at the age of 101.

Jean lived for many years at Brookside Cottage on Yoxall Road with her late husband, Jack, and was an active member of village life. She served as a Newborough Parish Councillor for several years and will be remembered by many residents for her involvement in the community. Brookside Cottage also played its own part in village traditions, with the clay for the Newborough May Day celebrations traditionally being trodden and puddled on Jean’s drive.

Jean was also co-author of The Book of Newborough, which records the history of the village and its origins stretching back to medieval times, accompanied by a wonderful collection of historic photographs.

Thanks to the kindness of a parishioner who has preserved a digital copy, The Book of Newborough will shortly be available to read on the Newborough Parish Council website, allowing both current and future generations to explore the history of our village.

Jean’s funeral will take place at All Saints’ Church, Newborough, at 10.00am on Friday 25 September, followed by interment in the churchyard alongside her late husband, Jack.

The Parish Council extends its sincere condolences to Jean’s family and friends and remembers with gratitude her many years as part of the Newborough community.
